Restore your smile functionality today with a DENTAL BRIDGE
Dental bridges are a long standing, efficient solution for replacing missing teeth, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits. Dental bridges work by using a prosthetic tooth to fill the gap created by missing teeth. They use the surrounding teeth as support to “bridge” the gap left by the missing tooth (or teeth). A bridge consists of an artificial tooth, known as a pontic, that is anchored in place with crowns attached to the adjacent teeth or dental implants. These anchoring teeth, called abutment teeth, provide support for the bridge. A dental bridge is a reliable and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, restoring both function and appearance and also prevents teeth from shifting out of alignment.
By replacing teeth, bridges can also play an essential role in aesthetic dentistry. They can be used in conjunction with crowns to cover discolored or poorly shaped teeth, creating a more attractive, symmetrical and uniform smile.

Frequently Asked Question
There are 3 main types of dental bridges:
- Traditional Bridge: The most common type, traditional bridges are essentially 3 (or more) crowns that are fused together with the ends attached to the remaining teeth, and the pontic (false tooth) sitting in the space of the missing tooth.
- Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge): A more conservative option that may be used on front teeth, Maryland bridges use metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth.
- Implant-Supported Bridge: Instead of relying on natural teeth, this type uses dental implants for support.
Good candidates for dental bridges are individuals who have one or more missing teeth but still have teeth with a healthy foundation on either side of the gap. Adequate oral hygiene, healthy gums, and a commitment to maintaining oral health are essential for the long-term success of a dental bridge.
Typically, getting a dental bridge takes two appointments, which will be scheduled approximately 2 weeks apart.
The first visit usually takes about 2 hours. During that visit, Dr. O’Donnell will prepare the teeth by removing any decay or unstable existing filling material. A buildup material is then applied and cured to provide a stable platform onto which the bridge will be placed. Precision reduction of the buildup and tooth structure follow to allow just enough space for a bridge to fit onto the teeth. From there, a state of the art intraoral scanner is used to record with micrometer accuracy the shape and contours of the teeth to be sent to a lab. This eliminates the need for old-fashioned “gooey” impressions. The digital scan is sent to our dental laboratory where they can start working on your custom bridge right away. Finally, a temporary bridge will be placed while the permanent one is made, which usually takes about 2 weeks.
You should expect your second appointment to take about 30 to 60 minutes. At this appointment, we will remove the temporary bridge, and then “seat” or “deliver” the permanent bridge and cement it in place.
Insurance plans typically expect bridges to last 5 to 8 years, but with proper care, dental bridges can last 10 to 15 years, or even longer. Recent advances in materials science have made dental decay the most common reason for bridges to fail, rather than from material failures. Regular brushing, flossing, and professional fluoride treatments will help extend the life of your bridge. Wearing a night guard to protect your teeth from grinding, and avoiding chewing on hard objects can also help prevent damage to your bridge and natural teeth.
Usually, Yes – unfortunately dental bridges don’t last forever. They need to be replaced if one or more of the teeth underneath decays, or if the material fractures. If enough healthy tooth structure remains, the bridge can be replaced. Many people don’t know that even though bridges themselves cannot get cavities (decay), it is common to get decay on the teeth underneath because bridges can be difficult to clean.
Caring for a dental bridge is similar to caring for natural teeth. You should:
- Brush twice daily.
- Use a water flosser or a floss threader to clean underneath the bridge where traditional floss cannot reach.
- Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth at night.
- Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups, x-rays, and cleanings.
If you’re not a candidate for a dental bridge or prefer a different solution, alternatives include:
- Dental Implants: Surgically placed titanium implants replace the missing tooth roots and are a very stable platform to replace teeth. .
- Partial Dentures: Removable prosthetics that replace one or more missing teeth, but ude the remaining teeth for support.
- Full Dentures: An option if you’re missing all of your teeth.
Each option has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and we can help determine the best treatment plan for you.
