Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, teeth whitening is generally considered very safe. Our in office whitening system uses products and techniques designed to minimize sensitivity and protect your tooth enamel. As with anything, you can have too much of a good thing. Generally, we recommend an in office whitening no more than every 12-18 months. Between in-office treatments, our at-home whitening system will help to keep your smile bright.

The results vary, but you can usually expect in-office whitening results to last from six months to a year. Factors like diet, tooth porosity, age and oral hygiene habits will affect how long whitening lasts.

Some sensitivity can be expected with teeth whitening. The majority of patients report very little discomfort during in-office whitening treatments. Some may have temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation, but this usually subsides within a day or two. Our take home whitening system with a lower concentration of whitening gel can be a great option for people who know they have extra sensitive teeth.

Generally, whitening every 12-18 months is considered safe. Whitening for too long or too often can damage enamel and lead to increased sensitivity.

Teeth whitening is most effective on discoloration of the enamel surface from foods, drinks, and smoking. Keep in mind, if the discoloration is covered by tartar, debris, plaque or stain, the whitening will be less effective. Discoloration from deeper within the tooth due to age related changes, trauma, developmental staining due to antibiotic use or previous dental procedures may require other treatments to achieve the desired result.

Maybe. Depending on how sensitive your teeth are, sensitivity can usually be managed by our system of techniques and products designed to minimize sensitivity during and after the treatment. For some people with very sensitive teeth, we recommend using a lower concentration at-home option.

Whitening only works on natural teeth. Fillings, crowns, and veneers will not change color, so they may need to be replaced to match your newly whitened teeth.

The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation. These usually resolve on their own within a few days.
